We Hurt...But We Still Hope.

It's been awhile, I know.
Things have been a little crazy around here.
So this will just be a quick update (I promise a good picture post will come soon enough!)...Just bear with me!
So...Cayden got his cast off on March 3rd, only two weeks of casting to prevent any more bone atrophy than necessary. That day, we also had the extra blood drawn for more genetic tests as planned. Once freed of the fiberglass leg, my fears from the last post became reality. Cayden wanted nothing to do with walking, and wouldn't even put his right foot to the ground. Is this going to last long?? We had no idea. Dr. Ballock told us that the healing process would really take a good 4 weeks, and with only 2 weeks of casting it wouldn't be a surprise if it took another 2 for him to start using it again.
So time passed. A week and a half later he finally put his foot to the ground. He walked/limped along furniture for the next 3 days - not walking on his own, but we were so happy with any progress.
Then we hit another big bump in the road. He took a tumble off the couch (typical 20 month old...thinks climbing up and down is a fun game - especially now that he could use both feet to do it!) and hit his right shin on the metal table leg. For most kids, this might have resulted in a sore leg and a nasty bruise...for my son...another FRACTURE. My worst fears literally smacked me in the face...again. I cried, and I cried, and he cried because I was crying. I blamed myself. He was splinted...he was casted...and here we are. Three weeks in a camouflage cast from the diaper to the toes. I was calmed and reassured by my family, my husband, our amazing doctor and even by the eyes of my precious son. Though tests have come back normal, there is some reason for this, and we will find it. And we will fracture, and he will be okay. Bones heal. And so do hearts. Mine breaks and hurts quite often because of all of these struggles...but I have hope. We have been accepted for treatment at the renowned Shriner's Hospital in Montreal and are arranging for follow-up care there. This is the Osteogenesis Imperfecta capital of the world. And they WILL find some answer. I am hopeful. So we will continue to live our lives, protecting our son as any parent tries to, but will be mindful not to shelter him in a way that would prevent him from thriving as any 20 month old should. He is strong, and he makes me strong. Some days are better than others...but we will all heal - just give us some time :-)
(Meme's blog has some recent pictures if you want to check them out! Thanks so much to all of your kind words and prayers - we recognize and are thankful everyday for the strength we feel from such support!)

My Heart Breaks...

As a Mama, my heart breaks every single time I look at my broken little boy. The cast takes over his lower half, however it will thankfully NEVER take over his strong heart and bright personality.
I realize that, being pregnant, my emotions are heightened, but I've spent a lot of the morning just looking at Cayden (happy, not in pain, playing with his dinosaurs and crawling around the family room floor) and crying to myself. I don't want him to see me so sad, but I just worry for him. He had just finally got the hang of walking and starting to do pretty well at it, and now this. Another set-back. I worry that he will be nervous about walking again after the cast is removed. I'm worried that it will happen again. I'm worried that the three fractures he's had in his first 19 months of life mean something more. And I worry for his future. All while he takes it like an absolute Champ. He amazes me every day -so resilient, so strong- sometimes stronger than I am I think.
This also means more genetic testing. Dr. Ballock thinks that something abnormal is still going on. In looking at his x-rays, he noticed once again that Cayden's bone density still just isn't what it should be. And, again, that worries me. But I trust him completely to continually take such great care of my baby. So we will return to him in 2 weeks (hopefully 2 short weeks), to reevaluate the fractures, and hopefully remove the cast. We will also have more bloodwork drawn for genetics. Please pray for quick, easy healing for my boy, and strength for Mama and Daddy. :-)
I know it's just another speed-bump in the road of life, and that we'll all come out of it just fine. And I know that Cayden will be the strongest little boy, and an amazing young man someday because of his trials. We've got to take the bad with the good, and make the most out of it all. I hope more good comes soon! I'll stay hopeful :-)

Cayden's Not so Good News...

"This is the boo boo I got at my Meme's house today" As he points to his new cast.

Broke 2 bones in his foot.... A really big set back for the little guy, who was just really starting to walk around more and more. That's just what he was doing... walking and he tumbled down on his foot and the screaming began, and Meme just knew something was wrong.

But no worries. This little guy is one stuff little boy. One still so happy little boy!

Guess What?!?!

I have very big news!! Even BIGGER news than last time!!....
I, yes me, Cayden, am going to be
A BIG BROTHER!!

My new baby brother or sister has been cooking in Mama's belly for about 11 weeks already! I can already see it growing (at least Mama's belly is!!). I can't wait to have a real baby to play with!! Mama says I have until August 31st to practice being a big brother before the real one comes! So I've been working really hard at playing and being nice!

I think I'll be GREAT!!

NO! :-)

If you know my son at all, you would know that this boy loves the word "no." Whenever he's asked a question in which a "yes" or "no" response is appropriate, the first thing out of his mouth99% of the time is "nyoo." (His version of no...with a slight twang!)
Then many times, if its something favorable, he thinks for a minute, and after this initial response will then say..."yeah!"
For example: Me: Cayden, do you want some nums?!
Cayden: "Nyoooo."....."Yeah!" :-)
This brings me to a conversation we had had multiple times in the days leading up to Christmas...It makes me chuckle every time so I thought I'd share.
Me: Cayden, are you a good boy?!
Cayden: Nyoo. (shaking his head vigorously)
Me: You're not?? Are you a bad boy??
Cayden: Nyoo. (now laughing a little, and still shaking his head)
Me: Is Santa gonna come to our house?
Cayden: Nyoo. (now with a more serious face, eyebrows turned down, really contemplating
this one)
Me: Are you gonna get some new toys for Christmas?!
Cayden: Nyoo.
So not once did he change his mind to "yeah" for any of these questions...but he sure thought long and hard about what I was asking! And as it seems, Cayden is, in fact, a good boy. And Santa did come to our house. And Cayden did get lots of great new toys for Christmas! He makes me smile. :-) Such a little ham!
